BLACKPOOL HISTORY
Blackpool started as popular resort in the Victorian era. Today it is still meant to be the No.1 UK holiday resort with millions of people coming to the town to see the Illuminations each year in the autumn. The Illuminations started in the 1920s as a way of prolonging the holiday season and now the light show goes on for over 6 miles. Each year more and more lights are added to the lighting show.
In the past whole communities would get a week off in the summer whilst the mill machinery was serviced and many would head to Blackpool as it is famous for fun and enjoyment at all ages. Today many still head for the town a short break or even just a weekend of fun.
Blackpool gained the famous Blackpool Tower - meant to rival the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Blackpool also had Blackpool Pleasure Beach with its roller coaster rides and the Big one - big dipper that would scare the bravest of riders.
The coast line along Blackpool’s seafront has thousands of Hotels, self catering apartments and guesthouses. Even today big names like the Hilton have large hotels on the seafront and now new hotels are being built on land to provide even greater accommodation for future guests.
Blackpool is often spoken about as the centre of ballroom dancing, with the Tower Ballroom, a centre of entertainment. Blackpool boasts top shows all year round with three piers, Winter gardens and the UK’s premier water park, as well as the amusements and rides. You can always find something to do in Blackpool even if the British weather is not on your side.
Blackpool trams run up and down the sea front for over 15 miles taking ou all the way to Fleetwood. Taxis are plentiful and horse drawn carriages carry you all the way along the prom to get the best views of the town.
Blackpool constantly changes with the times and never gets stuck in the past. It is still a great place to go for entertainment and to experience the Great British Summer Holiday. Blackpool has always been a special place. It has always been brash, over the top and colourful. It is the place to go and have a good time by the sea and defines what many people think of as the British Seaside.
